AFTN Soccer Show (Vancouver Whitecaps/MLS)

The AFTN football/soccer podcast about Vancouver Whitecaps and Major League Soccer (MLS)

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, and Canadian football chat.

The wild, wild West is going down to the wire and the Whitecaps are right in the mix for a first postseason berth since 2017. Wednesday's night's win over Minnesota was huge for the 'Caps playoff hopes and with two games left to play, a point may prove to be all they need.

We pick over the bones of that win and look at some of the standout performances, plus we round up the midweek MLS action and look ahead to the season run-in for all of those teams battling for a playoff spot.

But it's not all been happy news in Whitecapsland as the women's team abuse scandal that rocked the club resurfaced this week with allegations against another coach. With this following on from disturbing abuse allegations coming out of the NWSL over the past few months, we chat about the issue of player safety in the women's game and what lessons will be learned for future generations from these cases.

And there's still time to chat about some of the other big talking points around Canadian soccer this week and bring you two more tunes from our Artists of the Month, Australian band The Chats, one of them in this week's Wavelength.

Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode:

02.24: MLS West midweek round-up

It's been a busy week for Vancouver Whitecaps with three games in seven days and seven points taken from them. It's left the team above the playoff line with three games to go. Can they hang on? Can they even secure a home playoff game? And what does all of that mean for interim head coach Vanni Sartini? It's going to be a nervy end to the season.

We chat about all of that and more as we look back at the Whitecaps dramatic come from behind win in Portland and the hangover draw in San Jose. What does that do to the team's mentality and how the rest of the West will view them? Was dropping points in San Jose just them running out of juice? We look at the latest playoff picture in the MLS West and preview the crucial midweek match against Minnesota.

And there's still time to chat about the Canadian women's celebration tour, play a Wavelength song all about Qatar 2022, and bring you two more tunes from our Artists of the Month, Australian band The Chats.

We cover a lot of bases again this week as we talk football at club and country level around the country.

The temperature gauge was certainly rising in the MLS Western Conference as the action heated up with six games remaining. The Whitecaps finished the weekend in the same situation they started it, one point and one place back off the playoff line. They kept there with a fantastically hard fought home win over Sporting Kansas City.

We pick over the bones of that game, look at the weekend's action in the West, and preview the 'Caps next two matches. Can they keep things going?

Plus we look at Canada's World Cup qualifier against Panama and cast our eyes over the latest results and standings in the Canadian Premier League.

We cover a lot of bases this week as we talk football at club and country level around the country and the region.

Kicking things off in Major League Soccer, we delve into the latest Cascadia Cup clash that saw the Whitecaps fall to a 4-1 defeat in Seattle. After a horrible start, they gave a decent account of themselves at times during the match, but defensive lapses loomed large and cost them dearly. We look at all the highs and lows coming out of the match, where that leave's the 'Caps in the MLS West playoff race, and look at the season run-in for all the team in and around them.

Moving on to the international stage and CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, we look back at Canada's two draws with Mexico and Jamaica, the chances taken and the missed opportunities, and after a dramatic round of games, where that leaves all the teams five matches in ahead of a big Canada v Panama game on Wednesday evening.

And we round things off this episode with a discussion about the new League 1 BC that was officially announced this week. We chat about the details that have been revealed thus far and discuss whether BC is ready for such a league, the importance of getting the excitement in the local communities in growing the game here, what this can mean in the grand scheme of player development, and a lot more.

The Whitecaps made it one loss in their last 15 matches with a crucial 3-0 win over San Jose Earthquakes at the weekend, moving to within a point of the MLS playoff places thanks to a Brian White hat-trick. We pick over the bones of that one, hear from head coach Vanni Sartini, and see where the win leaves the 'Caps in the playoff picture.

We also delve in the Whitecaps attacking and defensive options for the rest of this season and next, and debate whether now is the time for a settled starting line-up when possible or is the tinkering a way to keep things fresh and the opposition on their toes?

Turning our attention to the international stage, we look ahead to Canada's three World Cup qualifiers and chat with 'Caps keeper Maxime Crepeau about them.

Plus what is Vanni Sartini's favourite jam? Does Florian Jungwirth fancy a chocolate digestive?
