Episode 306 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Auf Wiedersehen, Pet with guests Alphonso Davies, Jordon Mutch, and Simon Colyn)

It's the end of the season and the end of an, albeit short, era as Vancouver Whitecaps 2018 MLS season came to an end on Sunday and Alphonso Davies said goodbye to the club, the fans, and the city as he gets set to head off to Europe to join Bayern Munich.

We look back at the emotional day that was but also the frustration that was left behind with the final standings that saw the 'Caps finish just two points, and one win, away from a playoff spot. How close were Vancouver in reality and does the squad need a complete rebuild or build around a current core when the new manager comes in? We look at all that and more, and ponder which other players we may have seen for the last time.

We also sit down with Alphonso Davies to talk about his three years with the Whitecaps and relive some memories with him of his time in Vancouver. Plus we chat with Jordon Mutch about the ups and downs of his first season in MLS and hear from young homegrown player Simon Colyn after his MLS debut.

Episode 305 - The AFTN Soccer Show (It's Over Now)

All good things come to an end. And so do bad things thankfully. Whatever Vancouver Whitecaps 2018 MLS season was, their playoff hopes were finally ended this weekend after two varying performances against teams at the top end of the Western Conference.

We look back at the week that was. The collapse and defeat to Sporting KC, the fighting back draw against LAFC, and some of the headscratching decisions that happened over the 180 minutes.

So where did it all go wrong for the Whitecaps this season, and were we really all that far away or is there an ever widening gap between Vancouver and the top teams in the West?

Episode 302 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Wake Me Up When October Ends)

It's been an eventful week for Vancouver Whitecaps, albeit not the kind of headlines the club would be hoping they'd be making at this point of the season.

Carl Robinson's departure was a look to the future for the 'Caps, but if anyone thought it was going to have an immediate impact on the present, Saturday's loss to the LA Galaxy quickly dispelled those thoughts.

We look back on the week that was, talking some more about Robbo's release and who the prime candidates are to take over from him. Marc Dos Santos may be the standout name at the top of many people's lists, but who else is in the frame? And what identity will that see the 'Caps with moving forward?

Episode 301 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Back To Basics with guests Craig Dalrymple, Stefan Marinovic, and Marvin Emnes)

The Carl Robinson era is over at Vancouver Whitecaps. He's certainly left an admirable legacy behind but it's time to get back to basics for the remainder of this season before the club heads into its most important offseason in their time in MLS.

We look back at Robbo's sacking, the timing of it, what it means for the future, and especially how it may play out for the rest of this season. We also sit down for a chat with new, interim head coach, and a man we've known well for a number of years now, Craig Dalrymple.

The dismissal of Robbo aside, there's still five games left to battle in this season, and while the playoffs may feel like a somewhat distant hope right now, they are at least still within touching distance and we chat with Stefan Marinovic about the mood of the group heading into them, facing Ibra and LA this weekend, and more.

One man who we may see down the stretch is the last player Robbo brought into the squad, Marvin Emnes. We chat with the Dutch winger about where his fitness levels are at, when we may see him, and if he sees a future for himself in Vancouver at a Robboless Whitecaps.

Episode 300 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Same Again - Vancouver v Dallas, Rahul Kholi, Jay Nolly) [NSFW]

What a weekend this could have been. Once again Vancouver Whitecaps had other results go in their favour and once again they failed to get the job done themselves. "Same again" said Carl Robinson, "not again" said the supporters.

So our 300th episode isn't quite the celebratory start we'd hoped for as we pick over the bones of the 'Caps defeat to FC Dallas, but the fun soon starts to pick up after that!

We have two interviews to bring you this week. First off all it's a blast from the past as we chat with Whitecaps legend Jay Nolly about his time with the 'Caps and his new career as a commentator for RSL.

Episode 299 - The AFTN Soccer Show (No Room For Error - Vancouver v Dallas preview show)

Last week's loss to Seattle hit Vancouver Whitecaps' playoff hopes hard, but they're still hovering around the playoff line, albeit underneath it, as second placed FC Dallas come to town on Sunday.

Fire up the bat signal as Vancouver Whitecaps are going to need the help of a superhero or two if they want to get into the MLS playoffs. Or at least that's how it's looking after the 'Caps big 2-1 loss to Cascadian rivals Seattle Sounders on Saturday night.

Episode 297 - The AFTN Soccer Show (All Or Nothing - Vancouver v Seattle preview show)

Last year's playoff series with Seattle Sounders was a massive letdown for Vancouver Whitecaps supporters. The team's performance over the two legs was simply not good enough, and the lack of attacking desire in the home leg in particular was a major disappointment.

The two teams meet at BC Place this weekend for the first time since that match, and for the second time this season. When the sides clashed in Seattle in July, the 'Caps kickstarted an eight-match unbeaten streak for the Sounders. If they want to keep their playoff hopes alive, they need to end it on Saturday. This time they have to attack and they have to win. It already feels all or nothing.

Episode 294 - The AFTN Soccer Show (The State That We Are In)

At half time on Saturday, it felt like a seismic shift in Vancouver Whitecaps' season lay in store. By full time, it may have been a result that does that but in a completely opposite way. Trailing 2-0 to the worst team in all of MLS, the 'Caps dug deep and pulled out a 3-2 come from behind victory in San Jose.

Is this a major mental turning point of their season or just another struggle against a poor team, albeit one that ended with three points for once? We look at that and all the other main talking points from the match and hear from both head coaches.

Episode 293 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Tremors - San Jose v Vancouver preview show)

It feels that the plates are moving in Whitecaps land. Tremors are being felt. The big one is coming. Amongst it all, the 'Caps are still fighting for a playoff place.

Next up for Vancouver is a trip to San Jose to face the team with the worst record in all of MLS. It's a place where the Whitecaps have yet to win, but surely they need to take all six points against a poor Earthquakes side to realistically still be in with a shot of making the postseason. From the highs of Portland to the lows of Toronto. It had been a busy and mixed few days for Vancouver Whitecaps. A lot of ups and a lot of downs, so it was perhaps only expected that we got both of those in the 'Caps 2-2 draw with New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

Depending on your glass half full/empty attitude to the 'Caps this season, this was either a battling point against one of the best teams in MLS this year, or two crucial points blown by an avoidable late goal. We take a look back at the match and hear from both head coaches.

Vancouver Whitecaps' cups runneth over right now. Not only are they right in the middle of a tantalizingly balance Voyageurs Cup final with Toronto FC, but there's the small matter of a Cascadia Cup game down in Portland on Saturday.

Joe and Nick look back at the night that was that Canadian Championship first leg. The highs, the lows, the even lower still. It was an evening of goals, stupid defending, and a referee taking centre stage. Oh Canada indeed.

Then they turn their attention to Saturday's match in Portland. The Timbers are unbeaten in 15, looking to set a club record, and facing a Whitecaps team that are frankly knackered. It's going to be tough but is this the kind of game that Vancouver will shine in and surprise? Or is a derby day calamity awaiting those of us making the long trip down the I-5?
