Episode 289 - The AFTN Soccer Show (No Room For Error)

August certainly feels like it could be a decisive month in terms of determining how successful we'll look back at Vancouver Whitecaps' 2018 season.

It's started well. The 'Caps fielded an understrength side and took a point at New York City. Normally that would be considered a great result, and while good, it only saw them slip further behind in the chase for the playoffs.

We look back at the match, hear from both head coaches, and delve into some individual player performances. We also look ahead to the first leg of the Canadian Championship final against Toronto FC on Wednesday, and hear some of the thoughts of Greg Vanney about how TFC will be approaching it.

Episode 288 - The AFTN Soccer Show (A Puliser Prize - NYCFC v Vancouver Preview Show)

There's no rest for the wicked. Vancouver Whitecaps are in the midst of their toughest spell of the season with games coming thick and fast in both MLS and the Canadian Championship.

The Whitecaps head to New York City on Saturday with the first leg of this year's Voyageurs Cup final coming up next Wednesday at home to Toronto firmly in their minds.

Joe and Nick look ahead to the match with NYC. Can we expect mass rotation from Vancouver? Just what will that look like? And is there any expectation of whatever side the Whitecaps put out being able to get anything from an in-form team with an unbeaten home record?

Episode 287 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Alphonso Über Alles - Whitecaps v Minnesota, Davies to Bayern, Doneil Henry interview)

What a dream week it's been for Alphonso Davies. Bayern Munich will be his new home come January and Vancouver Whitecaps fans should be in for a fun ride to end his time here if his performance in Saturday's win over Minnesota is any indication. Two goals and two assists. A true Canadian double double.

To celebrate we're bring you a German themed episode this week (well sort of) as we delve into Davies' transfer to the Bundesliga champions and what that may mean for the future of the Whitecaps. Where will the money be spent? Is the pressure on to find the new talent? How do we best develop future Phonzies?

Turning our attention to matters on the pitch, Davies stole the show on Saturday, but what a great week it was results-wise for the 'Caps with a Canadian Championship win over Montreal and a vital six-pointer triumph against Minnesota. We look back at the win over the Loons, ponder what, if anything, can turn this defence around, and hear from both head coaches, Minnesota's Adrian Heath and Vancouver's Carl Robinson.

Episode 286 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Darwinism - Vancouver v Minnesota Preview Show)

It's a grueling time for Vancouver Whitecaps. Three matches in eight days, with two of them in the space of four days, all of them crucial for how the season could play out, and it's sweltering hot outside. This will test a lot about the current 'Caps squad.

After a gutless performance in Seattle, and a battling midweek one against Montreal to reach the Canadian Championship final, which Whitecaps team will we see turn up to take on an in-form Minnesota United side this weekend?

Will there be more rotation to rest some guys up, or does Robbo ride a clean sheet and a good performance on Wednesday night with an almost same starting XI? Was that win against Montreal a blip or a turning point? How can the struggling Whitecaps defence cope with the huge danger posed by Minnesota's Darwin Quintero (9 goals and 6 assists), Christian Ramirez (7 goals and 2 assists), and Miguel Ibarra (6 goals and 6 assists)?

In been a busy week in Whitecapsland. Has Alphonso Davies played his last match as a 'Cap? How will the team spend their DAM (Davies Allocation Money)? Will they win another game this season? So much to talk about and we have it all for you in the latest episode of the AFTN Soccer Show.

Episode 284 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Cups Runneth Over - Seattle v Vancouver Preview Show)

Two Cup matches in four days. Three in eight. Usually that would be a yes please from us, but with Vancouver Whitecaps in a bit of a slump after three defeats in their last four matches, we're at what feels like a crucial turning point in the 'Caps season. Will they be able to follow the right path to success or does a trip to a witch in a gingerbread house await?

Vancouver Whitecaps' seesaw of a season continued this past weekend as they went down to a 3-1 loss at the hands of D.C. United in the US capital. We analyse the main talking points to come out of the game, hear from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, and ponder where the team can go from here.

We also look ahead to the midweek Canadian Championship semi-final in Montreal and get some thoughts from Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi on how the club view the Voyageurs Cup. Plus a look at the weekend in the MLS West and we make Mike Petke's postgame rant on Saturday even more epic.

Episode 282 - The AFTN Soccer Show (First Big Weekend featuring Bastian Schweinsteiger, Stefan Marinovic, Vancouver v Chicago analysis, and World Cup chat)

Just like a never ending game of snakes and ladders, Vancouver Whitecaps got themselves off a two match slippery slope, finding a rung to take their trajectory upwards again in a match between two teams that feel like they would struggle to find consistency in the dictionary.

Chicago Fire came to town and left on the end of 3-2 victory for Vancouver. We look back at the highs and lows of the match and the players' performances, hear from both head coaches, Chicago's Veljko Paunović and Vancouver's Carl Robinson, and chat about some of the latest Whitecaps news, from the continuing Davies to Europe rumours to the new U23 team the 'Caps are in the process of setting up.

We've got two interviews for you this week. The first is with Chicago's World Cup winner, German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger who talks to us about his move to MLS, Saturday's match and playing on turf, and his thoughts on Alphonso Davies.

We look back at Vancouver's Canada Day defeat at home to Colorado Rapids. What went wrong? How much of it was on the 'Caps and how much was down to the play of the visitors? Episode 275 - The AFTN Soccer Show (System Addict with guests Stefan Marinovic, Simon Colyn, and Marco Carducci)

Vancouver Whitecaps head into their bye week (call it what it is) unbeaten in six and starting to find some attacking form. The defence is still looking a bit dodgy and they still struggle at times when they have a man advantage, but there's a lot more optimistic feel around the place than it was perhaps a month ago.

Episode 274 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Horseplay with guests Tommy Wheeldon Jr and Will Cromack)

Sunday's AFTN Soccer Show on CiTR radio was so packed, we've had to release it over two parts. This second episode of the three hour show focuses on the Canadian Premier League and the PDL.

We kick things off with some PDL chat, looking at TSS Rovers great start to the season that's seen them go unbeaten in their last five matches to sit joint top of the standings. We chat with coach Will Cromack after a six point weekend that saw them lift their first piece of silverware.

After that we turn our attention to the Canadian Premier League. It's been a good and a bad week for fans hoping to see teams here in BC. Victoria look set to be in for 2019, but that's the expense of the Fraser Valley bid.
