It's a busy weekend of football, with Vancouver Whitecaps MLS, USL, and Residency teams all in action in crucial matches.
After a long stint at home, the 'Caps first team are back on their travels, heading to expansion side Minnesota United for the very first time. It's rivalry week, so I guess we can call this one the Røvde Derby, as adding a bit of spice to the tie is United's goalkeeper coach Marius Røvde, who left Vancouver after five and a half years to head to Minny. We chat with Marius [at 05:16] about his time in Vancouver, what prompted the move, Minnesota's start to the season, their danger men, and ask, does he know all of David Ousted's weaknesses?!
The MLS guys may be on the road, but the USL team is at home, taking on OKC Energy on Saturday afternoon. And they'll have a new face in the line-up, New Zealand striker Myer Bevan. We catch up with Myer [25:59] to chat about what brought him to Vancouver, his time in the Nike Academy in England, and his recent experience at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Korea.

Well that's been a week we're glad is over. A difficult one for Vancouver Whitecaps off the pitch, and a mixed one on it.
We're focussing on the footballing aspects of it all in the latest AFTN Soccer Show, as we look back at the match that was the 1-1 draw between the 'Caps and FC Dallas on Saturday. A good result considering all the line-up issues and uncertainty?
We discuss that, who stood out, who didn't, the goals, the talking points, and more, plus we hear from Brek Shea [at 31:11] about the whirlwind Saturday he had.
We also hear from the Dallas side from defenders Matt Hedges and Atiba Harris [40:40] who talk about the match, and former Whitecap Harris chats a little bit about the new football club he's setting up in his native St Kitts and Nevis.
It's going to be a busy week for the 'Caps at all levels. Minnesota is next up for the MLS team, and we preview what that might look like [49:00], before turning our attention the Residency teams who head to the USSDA playoffs this week. We chat with experienced defender Pa Modou Kah [60:13], who's in charge of the U18 team this week, about his transition to coaching and the playoffs ahead, plus we hear from WFC2 head coach Rich Fagan [67:46], about what help his squad may provide for the team.
Turning our attentions down south, it was quite the week for former WFC2 and SFU Clan head coach Alan Koch, whose FC Cincinnati side beat MLS opposition in the US Open Cup and revealed their new stadium proposals, with an eye firmly on making the jump to Major League Soccer. We chat with Alan [73:49] about all that, his time with the 'Caps and SFU, and lots more.
And there's still time to chat about IFAB's new proposed rule changes to the game [92:46] and Half Man Half Biscuit feature again in this week's Wavelength section. [109:01]

Vancouver Whitecaps finally have a place to call home.
The National Soccer Development Centre up at UBC is finally finished. It's felt like a long time coming but the end result has been worth with the wait, with the 'Caps now having a state of the art training facility.
We chat with Whitecaps President Bobby Lenarduzzi about what the facility means to the club and whether it's likely to attract players and touring teams to Vancouver.
We also sit down with Whitecaps Vice-President of Soccer Operations, Greg Anderson about the new training centre, having all the teams under the one roof, future plans, and more.
On the pitch, the 'Caps are back in action against FC Dallas this weekend. We look ahead to the match, and hear from head coach Oscar Pareja and defender Ryan Hollingshead.
It's also been a busy week for the Canadian Men's National team, with a 2-1 win over Curaçao, we chat about the match, the performance of Whitecaps players, and the future.

It's a milestone episode for the AFTN Soccer Show, and we're dedicating our 200th episode to a milestone in Canadian soccer - the new Canadian Premier League.
We'll chat about league logistics including locations, stadiums, the timing of the season, the player pool, and will we see a team here in the lower mainland and elsewhere in BC?
We kick things off with an extensive chat with the Director of Business for the CPL, Paul Beirne, split into two parts [Part One at 03:52 / Part Two at 24:49], and we also hear the thoughts of long time league advocate Daniel Squizzato [53.00].
The league may still be at least a year away from starting but the supporters are already getting organised and fully behind it. With two cities already confirmed as having teams, Winnipeg and Hamilton, we chat to James Hutton [82:50] from the latter's supporters group, the Barton St Battalion. And we also talk to James Covey [100:56] from a supporters group hoping their city, Halifax, gets a club.
All this, and a lot, lot more.

It's international week all over the football world and we're no different on the AFTN Soccer Show, as we bring you a special internationally themed episode.
There's a few 'Caps away representing their country on international duty this week, with perhaps the most important games coming up for the Whitecaps two Costa Ricans, Kendall Waston and Christian Bolanos.
We speak to both of them ahead of a busy week that could see the Ticos qualify for another World Cup. Waston tells us [at 05:11 mark] what qualification for Russia would mean for him personally, the task ahead, and just how good this current crop of Costa Ricans are, while Bolanos [09:54] looks ahead to whether or not he'll head to the Gold Cup with the team in July.
Moving on to Canada, we hear from an injured Whitecap who sadly can't be at the Gold Cup with Canada this summer, David Edgar, [13:37] who chats with us about his injury, when we might see him back on the pitch, life as a colour commentator, the Gold Cup, and the Canadian Premier League.
From a Canadian national team veteran to the team's newest recruit, Alphonso Davies, [23:14] as he chats with Harjeet Johal about what playing for Canada means to him, his meteoric rise, what his family have meant to his career, and more.
And we wrap the show up with a Canadian Hall of Famer, the newest recruit in fact, Paul Stalteri, [30:21] who chats about his career, the future of the game here, and a lot more.

Episode 198 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Feeling Peachy with guest Bernie Ibini)
Monday Jun 05, 2017
Monday Jun 05, 2017
It's certainly been an interesting eight days in Whitecapsland, covering a gamut of emotions.
We kick things off with a look back at the 'Caps win over Atlanta, thanks to a two goal Man of the Match performance from Kendall Waston. We chat about how the match played out, who shone, and is this 4-1-4-1 formation now set in stone due to the success it's been having.
We also pay a visit to the Atlanta locker room and hear the postgame thoughts [at 23:27] from Greg Garza, Michael Parkhurst, and Tyrone Mears, the latter of who also chats about his family being caught up in the Manchester bombing.
Sadly it's not all been good news for the 'Caps after crashing out of this year's Canadian Championship at the first hurdle. We look back at the loss in Montreal [37:31], wonder how seriously the club took it this year, and what it means in terms of money and playing time in the future.
Our player interview this week is with the Whitecaps new Australian winger Bernie Ibini [73:27], and there's still time to look at which Whitecaps may head out on loan, this week's Twitter faux pas by the 'Caps, WFC2, and a lot more, including Vanilla Muffins featuring in this week's Wavelength section [84:43].

Episode 197 - The AFTN Soccer Show (Dirty Cheaters United)
Monday May 29, 2017
Monday May 29, 2017
So it turns out that cheaters actually DO prosper. At least in MLS under PRO referees they do.
Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 loss to D.C. United, thanks to a dodgy winning penalty call, is a hard one to take. At least we now know what the D.C. aspect of the team stands for. But it wasn't all just down to that one call. The 'Caps did enough to win the game and their finishing, good goalkeeping, and the woodwork, all conspired to prevent that from happening.
We look back at all the big talking points from the match and hear the thoughts of both coach, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and D.C.'s Ben Olsen [15:57]. We also chat with the Man of the Match, D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and centre back Steve Birnbaum [53:04].
But the 'Caps have to put all of that behind them as they have a big game coming up this week with a Canadian Championship semi-final second leg in Montreal. We look back at the first leg, ponder what to expect from the second, and hear from two WFC2 players that made their competitive Whitecaps first team debuts last week - Dutch centre back Sem de Wit [73:32] and New Zealand defender Deklan Wynne [81:15].
And there's still time to look at the Whitecaps new training pitch and facility and hear the thoughts of Jordan Harvey, David Ousted, and Robbo on it and training on grass as opposed to turf [97:14] and have a quick look ahead to this Saturday's MLS match with Atlanta.

Monday May 22, 2017
The boys are back in town. Well men, but Thin Lizzy didn't sing that. And it was a case of men against boys for much of Saturday's match at BC Place as Vancouver Whitecaps came away with a 2-0 victory over the Western Conference leading Sporting Kansas City.
We look back at the 'Caps victory - the performance, the unchanged line-up for a fifth straight match, which players stood out, and which ones may need a rest. We bring you audio from both head coaches, Carl Robinson and Peter Vermes and ponder what we can take from the game moving forward.
We also talk with goalscoring hero Tim Parker after his first MLS goal, and hear from KC's Roger Espindoza after his horror challenge on Alphonso Davies (he's only 16 man).
There's also a look ahead to Tuesday's Canadian Championship clash with Montreal Impact, with some words from Robbo on the big game, plus I Ludicrous feature again in our Wavelength section, and lots more!

It once was lost, but now, it's found. Amazing!
After some technical issues that prevented podcasts being produced for all CiTR radio shows last week, it was looking like the May 14th episode of the AFTN Soccer Show might be a special one that was only going to be heard live.
But thankfully the issues resolved themselves and we can now bring it to you. We appreciate some of the talk is now dated, but we felt it worthwhile to bring you it anyway. Listen if you want more 'Caps talk and skip to the more recent episodes if you don't!
In this episode we look back at Vancouver Whitecaps' loss in Houston, ahead to the game against Sporting Kansas City, and talk injuries, squad rotation, and a lot more.
We also chat TSS and some local soccer, and a lot more, including our popular Wavelength section, which this week features John MOuse.

Football's coming home! Well Vancouver Whitecaps are anyway.
After a tough four game road stretch, the 'Caps will be back at BC Place next weekend, returning with six points from 12, a new formation, and a lot more promise than how things were looking at the start of April. They may have lost on Friday night to Houston, but it was a good performance and they should be heading home now with a bit of a spring in their step. And they need to be, as there's a lot of hard work ahead for them if they are to stay in the playoff places.
We look ahead to Saturday's game against the Western Conference leading Sporting Kansas City. Will there be a different formation? Who will come in and drop out? And will KC field a weaker team after their midweek exploits at home to Seattle? We get some clues as we hear from KC head coach Peter Vermes, defender Ike Opara, and Wednesday's hat-trick hero Gerso Fernandes
We also hear from WFC2 centre back Francis de Vries about his favourite books and chat with TSS Rovers head coach Colin Elmes about their start to their first PDL season.

Another week, another away win for Vancouver Whitecaps. We could get used to this.
We look back at Friday night's win in Colorado. Who stood out, the plusses and minuses from the match, and how the 'Caps are looking in this tough stretch of the season. We also look ahead to the next match in Houston and what twists and turns may lie ahead for the next spell of the season.
Our player interview this week is the latest addition to WFC2, South African striker Nazeem Bartman. After a stellar college career, Bartman was selected in this year's MLS SuperDraft and is a very exciting prospect with a fascinating journey to the 'Caps. It's a great chat.
And there's still time to chat about the big Canadian Premier League news this weekend and Frank Sidebottom features in this week's Wavelength section.

The new PDL season gets underway this weekend. To celebrate, we're bringing you an hour long PDL special.
We kick things off with a chat with the man running the league right now, PDL director Todd Eason (03:46 mark). We talk to Todd about the season ahead, the challenges facing the league from the likes of the NPSL and USL Third Division, where the PDL fits into the North American soccer landscape, the importance of bringing stability to the league, the part Canadian clubs play in the league's success, and a lot more.
Vancouver's newest PDL team kicks off their inaugural season on Friday. TSS FC Rovers may have a tough debut season ahead of them, but they've been doing everything right off the pitch to begin with.
We catch up with the two driving forces behind the team, Colin Elmes and Will Cromack (24:03), to chat a little bit about TSS' history, what they're hoping for this first season, the need for this pathway for local players, the supporters driven aspect of the club, and more.

Monday Apr 24, 2017
Monday Apr 24, 2017
Another week, another Cascadian derby, another Fredy Montero goal. Only trouble was this week it ended in a 2-1 defeat.
We dissect Vancouver Whitecaps' loss against the Portland Timbers. Was it the cliched game of two halves that it felt? Where did it all go wrong, who stood out, who was targeted, and should the 'Caps have taken something from it? We get the thoughts from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson and striker Fredy Montero after the match, about the game and where they go from here with three more tough away games coming up fast.
We also chat with Christian Bolanos, who had a poor first half display but was likely the best player on the pitch for the Whitecaps in the second half. It's an honest take after the game, and there may be a little frustration starting to show. See what you think.
With the MLS Transfer Window closing soon, are the 'Caps still likely to add some new faces? We hear from Robbo and ponder where they need to be and will they come?
There's also chat about tactics, fitness levels, Kekuta Manneh, a look ahead to next week's Canadian derby at Montreal, and more.

Part two of Sunday's mammoth two and a half hour CiTR radio show is featured in this episode of the podcast.
After looking at the State of the Whitecaps in Episode 188, we turn our attention to the Canadian game.
With the Three Amigos 2026 World Cup bid officially announced, we look over the details and what it may mean for the growth of football in Canada, both in the build up to a successful bid and the legacy from it. Was the bid fair? And what may the tournament look like here?
We also hear thoughts of MLS Commissioner Don Garber talking about what bringing the World Cup to North America will mean to the domestic game and how he's seen the game move on here since the 1994 World Cup.
With the Canadian Premier League set to start next year, we also chat about how that's shaping up and what we'd like to see from it. We talk with TSS Rovers owners and coaches Colin Elmes and Will Cromack about why they chose to start a PDL team now and whether we could see them move it to the Canadian PL one day.
